Reception - Rainbows

Welcome to Rainbows

Hello! I am Mrs Read and I am currently the teacher for Rainbows Class. We are extremely fortunate to have a number of adults who support our learning: Mrs May and Mrs Wakely assist in the morning and then Cassie and Mrs Clarke assist in the afternoons. We always have lots of fun in Reception: values, hard work and laughter are our priorities!

We have the same 3 rules throughout the school which makes it easy for us to follow them. They are: Keep safe, Use your Vlaues and Be the best that you can be. We learn about and practice these rules every day.

Our Daily Routine
We start each morning by going through our day so we know what is ahead.  We usually warm up our brains with some phonics, before moving on to some PE or child initiated activities.  Snack time refuels our bodies before we explore mathematical concepts. The afternoons are when we get creative: exploring art, design,
music, or the world around us before winding down with some circle time or a story.
Key skills are important

In phonics, we explore every aspect of a sound: what it sounds like of course (phoneme), what it looks like written down (grapheme), how to identify it in a word we hear (segmenting) and how we can fit it together with other sounds to form a word (blending). We begin with single letters, and then eventually move on to two letter sounds (digraphs), three letter sounds (trigraphs) and beyond! These form the building blocks to a healthy reading ability. Reading every day is really important. Just a few minutes on a regular basis can make such a difference to a child in every subject. A solid foundation in basic mathematical concepts is also essential: we begin with learning about how numbers are represented, we explore the composition of each
number and then we compare. Other mathematical skills are easier to explore if a child has a good knowledge in these core areas.
We believe in the power of a Growth mindset

In Rainbows class, one of the most important things we learn is that mistakes are our friends. We work hard to teach the children that making mistakes is not only normal and human, but they help us to learn, possibly more than we would without making them. Getting something wrong, is just as important as getting something right!
Our Year Ahead

As well as our nativity at Christmas, we have lots of exciting things ahead of us that we will be learning about, such as phonics, arts and crafts, understanding the world around us and a variety of maths skills. We also explore stories and how to write a story map with a beginning, middle and end! We experiment with music and song, learn how to use a variety of technology and much, much more!
How we keep our bodies and mind fit and healthy

We have regular PE lessons twice a week and take every opportunity to get active during the rest of the day! A popular extra activity is a bit of ‘Go Noodle’ which incorporates following dance routines. We also regularly have circle time and we talk often about our own feelings and the feelings of others.
