Year 1 - Unicorns

Welcome to Unicorns

Hello and welcome to Year 1! I am Mrs Ross and I am currently the teacher in Unicorn Class. We also have the fabulous Mrs Cross who supports us every day, helping us to reach our potential. In Year 1 we focus on working hard, trying our best and helping each other in every way. Our aim is for each child to grow in confidence and develop a life long love for learning!

We have the same 3 rules throughout the school which makes it easy for us to follow them. They are: Keep safe, Use your Values and "Be the best that you can be" We learn about and practice these rules every day.

Our Daily Routine

In Unicorn Class each day  we have phonics followed by English and then Maths - we believe that following the same routine helps the children to feel safe and secure throughout the day.  Afternoons are where we get creative and we always make sure we enjoy lots of outside play!  We can choose to bring in a packed lunch or enjoy a hot school dinner and we love eating our lunch together in the hall.  Year 1 is definitely a great mix of learning but also having fun!

Key skills are important

In Unicorn Class we enjoy daily reading, phonics, spellings and maths.  We make lessons fun and interactive by playing games, watching videos, listening to stories and working together!

We believe in the power of a Growth mindset

Confidence and a positive attitude to learning are so important in Year 1, so we teach the children how to really start to believe in themselves through Growth Mindset sessions! Having a ‘can do’ attitude is the key to progress - learning from their mistakes and understanding how they can take responsibility for their own learning is the goal.

Our Year Ahead

We place a lot of emphasis on Phonics to help the children to become fluent and confident readers. Daily reading is vital, so that they continue to revise and revisit previously learnt sounds, as well as segmenting and blending real and ‘alien’ words in preparation for the phonics test.
In the summer term the children can look forward to a trip to Woburn Safari Park which links to our topic ‘Animals’!
How we keep our bodies and mind fit and healthy

Tuesdays and Thursdays are our PE days! We wear black shorts/trousers and a red polo shirt. Monday is our day on the trim trail and we really enjoy using it as an opportunity to strengthen our muscles. To balance out the active times we also practise mindfulness to calm our bodies and to focus our minds. This helps us to learn to be still and to concentrate on what is important.
