I promise not to say anything else in French even though our wonderful little Puffins love any opportunity to practise their Gaelic lingo during registration for instance. As being French myself, I love their enthusiasm to learn my language! There are currently 29 children in Year 1 (called Puffins) who work their hardest at all times with the support of Mrs Kilby (TA) and myself , Ms Riberaud, the class teacher. Although we work hard we also have lots of fun and love to be creative and have already enjoyed creating our own ‘Gruffalo Tusks’ (fruits kebabs) this term. The children love to show and tell and because of the pandemic we have thought of a clever way to enable this to still happen safely without children bringing things from home into school. We have started our very popular virtual Show and Tell -it’s almost as good as the real thing! Every Friday, I will reveal something sent to me by a parent and their child will explain to the class what they have achieved outside of school. It is such a great way to support their speaking and listening. The children’s behaviour is excellent and we have the same 3 rules throughout the school which makes it easy for us to follow them. They are: Keep safe, Use your Values and Be the best that you can be”. We learn about and practice these rules every day.
Our Daily Routine
We have daily phonics lessons as well as daily Maths and English lessons. English and Maths lessons last for an hour and phonics for 20 minutes. We also read every day after lunch. To further support our reading, we also do guided reading within a group where we discuss a book to help develop the children’s reading comprehension. Every day, first thing in the morning, we practise our spellings ready for a test on a Friday. Our playtime is from 10:25 to 10:45 and our lunch is from 11:55 to 13:00. We use the playground at the front of the school and when the weather is good we use the trim trail and the area at the back of the classroom.
Key skills are important
Our daily teaching of the core subjects build on children’s skills throughout the year and they are also applied in a cross curricular approach. For instance, we are now using English learning objectives in all of the subjects as English skills are transferrable across all subjects. Maths skills are used in many subjects too. We encourage children to read daily at home and to practise their phonics and number bonds.
We believe in the power of a Growth mindset
In the class we celebrate making mistakes as the children know that mistakes are the key to success. If children get stuck they use their Growth mindset to try and solve the issue and not give up. A key phase we use in school is I can’t do it…yet! Children learn the importance of perseverance and determination. We try hard to develop resilient children.
Our Year Ahead
Year 1 have phonics screening towards the end of May where they are tested to check their reading skills with real and made up words. How we keep our bodies and mind fit and healthy
Year 1s are very active and any opportunity we have, we will use to jump around and dance. We have 2 hours of PE a week, and to keep our mind healthy we also use mindfulness activities in Art and in PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economics) lessons. Given the current national pandemic, we keep our classroom well ventilated and have established a robust routine of hand washing and cleaning. In Key Stage 2, children are encouraged to bring in a healthy snack to have at break time this could be fruit, vegetables, rice cakes and we are all encouraged to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
