Safeguarding

At Shillington and Stondon Lower we are committed to safeguarding all children. All our staff receive regular training on safeguarding.  Our safeguarding / child protection procedures can be found in our Safeguarding Policy.

The person responsible for child protection is called the Designated safeguarding lead.  The Designated Safeguarding Lead at Shillington School is the Headteacher, Mrs Sarah Flack.

The Designated Safeguarding Lead at Stondon School is the Headteacher Mrs Ciara Dumpleton at Stondon Lower.

The Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads across the Shillington and Stondon Federation, who have also undertaken the full Designated Person training, is:  Mrs Nicola Foxall, SENCo

The key aspects of the role are:

  • Making sure all staff are aware how to raise safeguarding concerns

  • Ensuring all staff understand the symptoms of child abuse and neglect

  • Referring any concerns to social care

  • Monitoring children who are the subject of child protection plans

  • Maintaining accurate and secure child protection records.

The Shillington and Stondon Federation is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All staff and governors must ensure that they are aware of these procedures.  We work closely with all relevant professionals sharing information where necessary to safeguard children

We record all safeguarding, bullying, racist and child on child abuse on CPOMs.  This forms a safe online digital store for all records for pupils disclosures and any events which a member of staff feels needs to be logged.

Safeguarding in Practice

We actively undertake our safeguarding commitment in a number of practical ways – these include:

Our staff

  • are DBS checked as part of the recruitment procedures in place

  • are made aware of our safeguarding policies and procedures during their induction

  • attend safeguarding training throughout each year, incorporating updates

  • record incidents and actions on our electronic system, which are shared with safeguarding leads.

  •  Safeguarding and attendance meetings help leaders identify any children/families who may require additional support

Pupils

  • actively engage with a Computing, PSHE and RSE curriculum that teaches them how to look after themselves and to keep safe

  • know of safe adults, beyond the family, to confide in at times of distress or danger.

  • are taught online safety as part of the computing curriculum

  • attendance is monitored and unexplained absences are followed up the same day by phone calls

  • have information around them to offer support through posters and displays

Parents/Carers

  • are encouraged to share any concerns with school and know how they can report these concerns. We utilise SeeSaw, to enable parents to communicate with staff at all times

  • are aware of our school safeguarding policies and have access to these on our website

  • are aware that we are an Operation Encompass school and can offer support

  • are offered an Early Help approach to gain maximum support as soon as possible

  • are offered Wellbeing advice and links to useful websites to support their own children

  • are offered support with e-safety

  • are given advice and support following annual review meetings

Governors

  • Receive appropriate training and a Lead Safeguarding Governor has regular meetings with Safeguarding Leads in school to ensure policies, procedures and systems are compliant.

Key information about safeguarding at Shillington & Stondon:

Operation Encompass

Operation Encompass aims to safeguard and support children and young people who have been involved in a domestic abuse incident. As an Operation Encompass school, we will be alerted of any incident the following day.

The Key Adult (usually the DSL) will be notified prior to the start of the next school day that the police have attended an incident of domestic abuse. This timely information sharing enables appropriate support to be provided for that child so that all interactions, from when the child first arrives at the school gates, are of a positive nature.

More information can be found here: http://www.operationencompass.org/

Prevent

PREVENT is part of the Government’s counter terrorism strategy CONTEST, it aims to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. All staff have been trained in PREVENT as vulnerable young people can be susceptible to radicalisation and recruitment into terrorist organisations. As a school we have a duty under the Counter Terrorism and Security Act 2015 (Section 26), to prevent children and young people from being drawn into terrorism.

As a federation, we have a zero tolerance approach to child on child abuse. All staff have been trained in recognising the signs and indicators of child-on-child abuse, and this type of abuse will never be accepted or dismissed as ‘children being children’.

Child on child abuse includes, but is not limited to:

  • physical and sexual abuse

  • sexual harassment and violence

  • emotional harm

  • on and offline bullying

  • teenage relationship abuse

  • grooming children for sexual and criminal exploitation

We are a Support Hub

Bedfordshire Domestic Abuse Partnership (BDAP) Support Hub Scheme promotes certain places in our local communities who can:

  • offer a safe space for someone to go to who needs to access support

  • offer a safe space for someone to contact a support service to help them safely end an abusive or controlling relationship

A BDAP Support Hub is an area in a public building that enables someone experiencing domestic abuse to be able to make a confidential call, use the internet safely to get help or to just be somewhere safe.

Staff who work in the BDAP Support Hub do not need to be experts in domestic abuse. Just having information about support services displayed and providing a safe environment for someone affected by domestic abuse to make a call or access on-line services, could make a big difference.
